Hoosier Lotto Exposed — Good Odds & Guaranteed Jackpot

Hoosier Lotto

Who’sh ‘ere – It’s Hoosier Lotto

Hoosier Lotto immediately paints a picture of a big, burly, uncouth individual though this is based on the definitely used in St. Louis, Missouri. In Indiana, home of the Hoosier Lotto, they use the term more proudly to refer to people from the State.  Hoosier Lotto is operated and governed by the State of Indiana who also runs a bunch of scratch games and are part of some of the national lottery games. So what are the odds on winning Hoosier Lotto?

Hoosier Lotto Odds

Hoosier Lotto has a five tier prize structure starting with 1 in 12,271,512 for the jackpot down to 1 in 7 for the 5th (last) prize. To compare with some of the bigger lotteries, the US Powerball’s big jackpot odds are 1 in 175,223,510.

Winning and Hoosier Lotto

This isn’t one of the big lotteries at the same time with those kinds of odds, it does suggest that the jackpot is won more. The jackpot starts at US $1 million and after two draws without a winner, US $500,000 is added each draw until the jackpot is won. Hoosier Lotto is played biweekly, Wednesday and Saturday so it does have the potential to grow though not based on how many people are playing. Its record jackpot was US$54.4 million (2007) with average rollover jackpots at US $5.6 million.

Getting Your Money

Prizes are paid out either in an annuity of 35 years or a lump sum. Lump sums are discounted based on an estimated value which means players are not going to see the actual amount of the full jackpot.

The Tax Man Cometh

It is important to remember this is a taxable lottery. For US citizens, this means a 25 % federal tax on prizes over $5,000 with a state tax of 3.5% on prizes over US $1,200. For non-US residents the federal tax is 30%.

Hoosier Lotto – The Game

Players choose 6 numbers from 1 to 48 which is what increases the odds compared to some other lotteries, as well there is no bonus ball. Players can play multiple lines either choosing their own favorite numbers or doing a quick pick where the machine randomly selects numbers.

The Rest of the Money at Hoosier Lotto

Hoosier Lotto is run to support various projects within the State of Indiana. This is an officially run lottery by the State. To date, prizes paid to players is US 9.2 billion with transfers to the state of Indiana of US $4.3 billion, Build Indiana Fund US $3 billion, Teachers’ Retirement Fund $705 million, Police Officers’ and Firefighters’ Pension and Disability Funds US $517 million with the rest going to small projects and retailer commissions.

Customer Service at Hoosier Lotto

Hoosier Lotto’s Customer Service operates during EST business hours. They offer an 800 (free call) number as well snail mail addresses. I did enjoy noting that their headquarters offers free surface level parking for visitors and directions to their offices including a map.

Hoosier Lotto Complaints

There is some noise on one of the scratch games they offer but nothing on the Hoosier Lotto itself. They had a problem with one of their games  with several customers  suing them based on the fact that as the lottery was getting to the end of tickets available, the odds should have increased. Instead, the prize pool decreased. This is still in litigation though it doesn’t appear it will affect Hoosier Lotto.

Hoosier Lotto – the Name

No one is quite sure where the name “Hoosier” came from. My favorite guesstimates on its origins is the fact that in early frontier days when people were approaching a house, they shouted out “Hello, the cabin.” The people living there would answer back “Who’sh ‘ere”. It is suggested that this slowly slurred into the word “Hoosier”. It does set it apart from some of the other state lotteries that simply use their state name.

The Bottom Line at Hoosier Lotto

This isn’t one of the big ones at the same time it does offer better odds. Hoosier Lotto is played biweekly and does grow. It’s an officially run lottery at the same time, the amount of winnings is immediately cut by the taxes that must be paid before the jackpot walks out the door.

Pros:

Official

Good Odds

Biweekly

Cons:

Slow to Grow

Taxed

Hoosier Lotto gets a thumbs up from our team. It’s not going to attract people who are looking for that huge jackpot at the same time, the jackpot is paid out on a fairly regular basis!
